Obituary

David Glenn McGuire, 75 of Mexia, passed away on November 6, 2022, at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia.  A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Mexia with Reverend Jerry Jones & Reverend John McGuire officiating.

Glenn was born on July 17, 1947, in Houston, Texas to parents Elmo and Joyce (Bowen) McGuire. He graduated Coolidge High School, Westminster College, Tennessee Tech University. Glenn’s primary vocation was teaching in public school.  He began that career in Dunlap, Tennessee teaching algebra and geometry at Sequatchie County High School from 1973 until 1979.  His family moved in 1979 to Florence, Mississippi to serve the Congregational Methodist Church, then on to Coolidge, Texas in 1984 where he taught algebra at Coolidge High School. While residing in Coolidge, he had the high honor of being elected mayor. He later moved to Mexia to teach at Mexia High School and was Vice-Principal at MHS from 1989 to 2014.  He loved teaching and taking high school students and community members on trips to Europe during Spring breaks and logged many miles visiting all the interesting sites in Europe and enjoyed it immensely.  He was emcee at numerous Mexia High School events and was the Voice of Blackcat football in the press box for many years. Glenn also served on the Mexia City Council for many years.

Glenn’s pastoral service included being an ordained pastor and Director of Foreign Missions in the Congregational Methodist church in Florence, Mississippi.  He was music director, elder, and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian church, Mexia, Texas, for many years.  He later became a Commissioned Pastor in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church denomination and was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Mexia from 2014 through 2019.  He was active in many of the functions of the Gulf South Presbytery.

Mr. McGuire was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mark McGuire.  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louise (Steedley) McGuire; sons, Ben McGuire of Austin and Patrick McGuire and wife, Leslie of Watauga; grandchildren, Madison and Olivia McGuire of Watauga; Sister-in-law, Valerie McGuire; Niece, Ashley Cargile and husband Marty; great-nephew and -niece Aaden and Kendall Cargile, all of Mexia; as well as several cousins.
