Jerome Cotton, 78, passed away on February 24, 2019 in Ft. Worth, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Mexia, with Pastor Julius Chappell officiating. Interment will follow on the Cotton Family land in Mexia. Family visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Services.
Mr. Cotton was born on July 21, 1940 in Limestone County, Texas just west of the Navasota River and near Burr Oak Springs (south of Lake Mexia). His parents were Christopher Columbus Cotton Jr. (Perk) and Elberta (Butler) Cotton. Jerome joined the Rocky Crossing Methodist Church at an early age. When the church moved to Sandy, he was a faithful member, attending Union Memorial United Methodist Church until becoming ill and unable to attend. Jerome also attended the Rocky Crossing Elementary School until his family moved to Mexia, Texas where he attended and graduated from Dunbar High School in1958. In high school, Jerome was active in all sports, but he enjoyed basketball, football and track the most. He wore number 42 and played the center position on the football team. He also ran the mile in track. After graduating from high school, Jerome attended Tyler Jr. College in Tyler, Texas, where he majored in Physical Education and played center on the football team. He also attended Prairie View A&M College after spending two years at Tyler Jr. College. Jerome Cotton was a gentleman's farmer, where he raised livestock and other crops. He was truly proud of creating fertile ground for his hay production. He also worked at and retired from the Mexia State School for over 30 years. He worked in the recreational department and was a bus driver. He enjoyed interacting (teasing) the young patients there and they enjoyed having his attention. Jerome loved those blackcats and was an avid sports fan. He was blessed with five children; Angelique Raquel Cotton-Shed, Jerome Delano Cotton Jr., Trenetta LeaJean Cotton, Tony Canada and Sonja Stanton. He was blessed with a heart full of grandchildren. He loved his daughter-in-law Kayla and his sons-in-law, Reggie and Jason. He loved and looked forward to seeing all of his nieces and nephews. Jerome was truly blessed. He departed peacefully into eternity on February 24, 2019 surrounded by his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy McMurray; brother, Joe Cotton. he leaves to cherish his memories his children; his brother, Wyatt Cotton, and grandchildren, Zacchaeus, Zion, Geonta, Morgan, Chris, Demmond, Kiara, Trea, Jasolyn and Silas; his daughter-in-law and sons-in -law. Also, to cherish memories are his nieces & nephews.
