Karien Trutschmann, 69, passed away peacefully at her home in Mexia, on December 12, 2024,
following a brief illness. Born on June 9, 1955, in the town of Deventer, Netherlands, to
Hendrikus Olde Hanhof and Maria Kunze; she was the youngest of 14 brothers and sisters.
In 1961, she was adopted by Dieter and Eva Bochow, gaining a true devoted home, and a new
loving sister, Daniela, 1 1⁄2 years older. They formed a life-long bond which held through the
many ups and downs of their lives until she passed away.
Karien’s story was one of adventure and romance and many challenges. In 1976 she moved to
Australia where she married and had two wonderful children, Tamara and Daniel. After a
divorce, she married the love of her life, Josef Trutschmann. Their life’s story was as vibrant as
the places they called home, and together they embarked on a journey that, in 1991, led them
to West, Texas, where her sister, Daniela, had already found her home in 1979 and had settled
in together with her husband and 4 children.
In 1995, she and Josef moved into their new home right at the shore of picturesque Lake Mexia
where they planted their roots and became cherished members of the community.
Karien quickly endeared herself to everyone she met with her warm smile, boundless energy,
and unparalleled culinary talents. She was best known for her role as the owner and operator of
two beloved restaurants, both aptly named “Karien’s Place.” Her establishments became local
institutions, celebrated for their delicious German dishes and decadent desserts, which she
crafted with love and skill. Her passion for cooking extended beyond her restaurants, as she
also brought her culinary expertise to the Rocking L on Lake Mexia, where she served hearty
meals to grateful patrons.
In addition to her culinary endeavors, Karien was deeply committed to her family’s business, IT
Plus Solutions, where she worked side by side with her husband, Josef. Together, they built not
only a successful business but also a legacy of teamwork and dedication.
Karien’s love extended beyond her family and community to include a special place in her heart
for animals. She was a devoted advocate for animal welfare, tirelessly supporting Lara’s House,
a non-profit animal rescue and adoption center serving Limestone County. Her compassion
knew no bounds as she cared for her own cherished dogs and cats, opening her heart and
home to stray and abandoned animals, providing them with love and security. “Mozart” (dog)
and “Cloe” (cat) ache for her as well.
Consequently, if you would like to donate, please send donations to Laras house.

One of Karien’s greatest joys was hosting gatherings, where her warmth and hospitality shone
brightly. She delighted in cooking for her friends and family, creating memorable meals that
brought people together. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling abroad with Josef, visiting
Vienna, Austria, to reconnect with in-laws and Melbourne, Australia, and especially to embrace
the joy spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Karien is survived by her devoted husband, Josef, and her one surviving child, Daniel, his wife
and two children, as well as her adopted sister, Daniela and family. Her legacy of compassion,
generosity, and culinary excellence will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of
knowing her. Karien’s light will continue to shine in the hearts of those she touched, reminding
us of the power of love and the joy of giving.
