Louise Magness Obituary

Some lives are remembered by a song. Others are remembered by the rhythm they set for everyone else.

Almer Louise Archibald Magness, known to most simply as Louise, was born on September 15, 1941. She was the daughter of Aubrey Archibald and Velma Moore Archibald and was later raised by her stepfather, Hugh L. Graham. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Don Archibald.

Louise was a proud graduate of Mexia High School, Class of 1959, and continued her education at Navarro College and McLennan Community College. While still in high school, Louise worked at the Mexia Theater, where she met Fenley Magness of Wortham, who was attending college at the time. That meeting would begin a lifelong partnership. Louise and Fenley were later united in marriage and built a life together centered on family, faith, and community. They were the parents of two daughters, Lesa Doylene and Donna Lynn.

Louise worked for the Mexia Chamber of Commerce and later for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission on the Mexia State School campus,  before purchasing Maden’s Flowers in Mexia. She transformed the business into Magness Florist, where she and her daughter Lesa worked side by side. For nearly 25 years, they owned and operated the florist, employing many friends and serving the community they loved. The floral shop became far more than a business. It became a ministry. Louise helped mark life’s most sacred moments—weddings, births, celebrations, and seasons of loss—with care, beauty, and quiet compassion. Through her work, she formed lasting relationships and walked beside countless families during their most meaningful times.

Louise was a strong-willed woman with high standards, firm expectations, and a disciplined approach to life. She was not always easy, and she never pretended to be. Those who knew her understood her directness and resolve. Fenley’s gentler nature softened her edges, and together they balanced one another in marriage, family, and life. Their partnership was one of contrast, devotion, and enduring love. She is survived by her daughter Lesa Hancock and her husband Kenny; her daughter Donna Story and her husband Dale.

Louise was a beloved grandmother to Taylor Groveton; Sydney Gutierrez and her husband Justin; Taelin Hancock; Laynie Hancock; and Ryan Hancock and Amanda Monteleone.   She was also  blessed with great-grandchildren Fenley and Bryce Barkouskie, Tinley Gutierrez, Jace Gutierrez, and Sunny Gutierrez. Nephews and niece, Chad Archibald, Colby Archibald and Holly Clay.

Louise’s life was marked by responsibility, service, and devotion to those entrusted to her care. She loved deeply, worked tirelessly, and left her imprint on her family and her community in ways that will long be remembered.

Louise’s family is deeply grateful for the kindness, compassion, and attentive care shown to her over the past several years by the dedicated staff and nurses of Elara Home Health Care, Reliant Hospice; Skilled Nursing Facility  caregivers; Brookdale Lakeshore Assisted Living; and finally, the extraordinary team at St. Anthony’s Care Center in Waco. Their professionalism, patience, and genuine care brought comfort not only to Louise, but to her family during a difficult and sacred season.

If Fenley’s life was defined by standing on the line through every storm, Louise’s life was defined by standing at the center—holding home, family, and faith together. Her strength was not loud, but it was certain. Her love was disciplined, faithful, and enduring. The life she built beside Fenley, and the family she anchored with resolve and devotion, will continue to bear the mark of her steady hand.
