A tribute written by William's nephew:

In loving memory of Uncle Willie, a steadfast guardian of family and a passionate advocate for self-sufficiency. Although he was my uncle, he always seemed more like a good friend. His understanding of my generation, hobbies, and lingo closed an age gap of 20ish years and created a relationship not found between most uncles and nephews. From him teaching me a video game I still play at almost 30 years old, to him showing me simple home remodeling and construction. His knowledge base was so vast and he was often too smart for his own good. His unwavering dedication to caring for those he loved created a strong foundation for us all. Willie had a special bond with animals, particularly his beloved cats, who outnumbered us all. A true homesteader at heart, he championed the virtues of hard work and resilience, inspiring us to cultivate our own paths in life. His headstrong nature and commitment to independence will forever remind us of the importance of standing strong in our beliefs. Though he may no longer be with us, his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched. Rest in peace, Uncle Willie. Your love, friendship, and the things that you taught me will be cherished always. -Joseph Byrd
